A look at the Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD Player

Red ring ‘o’ death…as if Xbox 360’s weren’t bad enough

It’s no secret that I truly love the startling detail and features that the next generation optical formats give us. It’s also no secret that I have opted for the HD-DVD format rather then Sony’s Blu-Ray. I have done this mainly because all the classics that I truly love are all on HD-DVD, whilst the action popcorn flicks tend to be on Blu-Ray. I also like the fact that the standalone HD-DVD players are coming down price wise at a startling rate, whilst Blu-Ray players remain at a slightly more expensive price.

Given that I already own the Xbox 360’s HD-DVD player, I always wanted a standalone player the moment prices became affordable. Lately the price of the second generation Toshiba HD-E1 player has crashed, most probably due to Toshiba’s recent announcement that their third generation players are on the way. This morning I took delivery of the player, and will detail my experiences with it for the next two days. You can check out my review here.

  1. 1 PR

Methinks I’ll stick to my 360 addon, then when it toasts the 360 I can send it off and get a new one hopefully with the new Heat Sink and a HDMI port \o/

Sod that, you’re better off praying that you get a 360 with the 0.65nm CPU/GPU bits, that’s more important!

So far we’ve got Elite’s on the way to the UK that will possibly have either:
    1. The new heatsink
    2. New heatsink HDMI
    3. New heatsink HDMI & 0.65nm hardware

Obviously we want No.3, but no one knows when they’ll hit our shores, let alone stateside.

  3. 3 PR.

One that doesn’t forget where its DVD drive lens is would do me. I should probably get that sorted…

Nice player mate, I am avoiding the HD formats for a while until the player prices go down. The price of that toshiba is very tempting though :)

You failed to mention this weeks bombshell that Paramount and Dreamworks have opted to solely develop for HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray resulting in Shrek 3 and Transformers(!) being HD-DVD only.

Also, Heroes the TV series will only be released on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray, at least not in the forseeable future.

Yeah matey, I was going to but I guess I just forgot.

All the hype and momentum that Blu-ray had gathered just went to pooh. HD-DVD is looking stronger than ever now, good stuffs.

Got Heroes S1 on the way right now. Hope I get it over before this bank holiday weekend.
