So upgrading shouldn't be a pain for you since you aren't relying on tag based plugins yet. I don't use widgets either as I'm not a fan of them so I refuse to use the sidebar modules plugin or any variants. Wordpress has lately had built in support for them but I've disabled them because I prefer to code sidebar.php myself. You’ll be ok mate because yours is still new and fresh.
