A rant – British Gas

The most useless website ever

Where the hell do I start? Right now I am pissed put it that way. I’ve just returned from a lovely night out with the girlfriend, to find an email in my Inbox telling me my electricity bill is overdue. "Heck that be no problem" I thought to myself, "I will just use my dads credit card and pay the bill, and bank transfer him the money".

At this point you’re asking why I aren’t using my card I would guess? Well because the old British Gas website that boasted about discounts and paperless billing does not even accept VISA! However they do accept Solo, Maestro, Delta and other crap cards that only 60yr old pensioners use. So I pay the Gas and Electricity bill with my dads card and then transfer the money from my account to his. Sweet? Well no.

Xbox 360 warranty extended to three years

Giiiit miiii rings!

I’m annoyed and ecstatic at the same time right now. Just yesterday, Microsoft caused shocks around the internet community by announcing, and I quote "Microsoft is extending the terms of its Xbox 360 warranty to three years for certain general hardware failures which are indicated by three flashing red lights on the console". Now this is tremendous news for Xbox 360 owners who have been plagued by hardware failures left, right and centre since purchasing their console. I am extremely happy to state that my launch day 360 is still running fine despite the fact that I treat it like dirt, and use it for 3hrs a day or so.

What angers me is that these hardware failures should never have happened in the first place. I hear users on the web stating that their Sega Megadrives or N64′s never broke, and that is true. It’s also a hugely unfair comparison as those machines never relied on kenetic parts, let alone a custom cooling solution. At the end of the day, the way I see it is that MS balls up massively when they designed the 360. For a long time I have realised that EVERY 360 is going to suffer at some point or another because of the poor cooling solution within the console. Was the 360 rushed back in December 2005? In my opinion yes, but for a good reason, and you can see that now with the console having a firm foothold in the console market, whilst Sony suffers.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI and Spyware

How the hell did I miss this? Geroff moi land!

Right, let me just state that I have been using Paint Shop Pro for image editing since the Windows 3.1 days, back when it was a small feature packed app that could fit on a single high density floppy disk. Over the years I have always stuck with this product through all the operating systems that Microsoft have churned out for the consumer. I love PSP and was concerned when Corel acquired Jasc Software, creators of PSP. Merging is baaad folks – just look at AMD/ATI.

Anyway, my old version of PSP wouldn’t work with the newly installed Windows Vista, so I had to upgrade. Had to purchase the bugger too as I couldn’t upgrade. Now I’ve got to state that, without sounding like an arse I always make sure my PC’s are ultra secure and I observe every little file that lands on them, however I have missed one, which I stumbled across by accident when I was examining processes as my new Vista install has been rather slow web speed wise over the past few days.

Autobiographies

The Gospel According To Chris Moyles

This week I bought my first autobiography! It was titled ‘The Gospel According to Chris Moyles’. Superb read to be fair.

Chris Moyles happens to be the Uk’s most popular breakfast radio show presenter and is a true legend. Him and his team have escalated Radio 1’s listening figures enormously and as a result, they’ve won a string of awards. Chris has just released his autobiography, which will no doubt sell like hotcakes. He’s not the biggest star in the world like your Wayne Rooney’s or your David Beckham’s but he’s very well known anyway.

So I’m perusing Amazon Uk for biographies when I stumble across a whole host of them belonging to no name British so called talent. There was a biography from Chantelle Houghton – the dumb winner of Uk Celebrity Big Brother! The ditzy cow is only in her 20’s and yet she’s got a book out detailing her ‘life’?! What life? 20yrs of it? Are you taking the pies woman?!

I’ve lost the will to live

While Taz’s ISP is down, she can’t reply to this, let alone read it! So let me state that today she admitted to actually enjoying loving listening to the new Paris Hilton tune! (prefer her videos to be honest) Oh how I’ll mock you for weeks upon end now woman! I thought I was bad being a fan of Phil Collins…

Last night I underwent what can only be described as a stressful 2hrs. I decided to run a Chkdsk (disk scan) on my PC’s hard disk, something I’d not done in a while. Now things were going well, until Chkdsk reported a colossal problem on the partition that Windows XP itself resides on. Without any intervention, the bugger decided to ‘fix’ the problem itself resulting in my entire windows partition rendered almost completely unusable. Sometimes I wish I actually used ghost to backup my data but I prefer to install stuff the manual way.

I ended up doing one of the fastest XP reinstalls I’ve ever done, and now have most of my apps restored, as well as my hardware devices up and running too. I’m quite lucky I didn’t actually lose any critical data because I keep them on a separate partition. It’s quite disconcerting to see such an important utility like Chkdsk do its scan, with the user not knowing weather his/her system will be usable after it’s finished it’s dirty work. Anyway, my PC is back up and running now. I’ve just got minor applications to install over the next few days.

I tell you, just a few hours without Internet access was quite a frightening prospect for me. Not having access to my email, this blog, MSN, IRC, online banking, online billing as well as the various forums I read on a daily basis left me very empty and somewhat lost. Moral of this story? Back up yer sodding data and avoid blonde bimbo’s!
