By popular request, this is a list of the plugins that I currently use on this blog.
Akismet
A plugin that everyone with a blog should use. Every incoming comment, trackback or pingback that hits your blog is automatically submitted to the Akismet web service, which checks the comment against hundreds of filters and either flags the comment as spam or not. It basically serves as a spam-net catching all unwanted spam and putting it to one side so the blog admin can check them at his/her discretion.
If Akismet catches and mistakenly flags a comment as spam, you can simply de-spam that comment, and the Akismet service will learn and adjust it’s system over time to deal with such mistakes. The end result will be a vastly improved anti-spam service that does a massive amount of work for you. Its simple to use and hassle free.
Bad Behaviour
Ah, now this is something else. As you know by now, Akismet is an anti-spam solution that catches spam and holds it for the admin for analysis. What if you could stop that spam from actually reaching your blog in the first place? This would almost entirely defeat the point in having Akismet in the first place wouldn’t it? Well nothing is ever perfect.
Bad Behaviour acts as a gateway for spam to enter your blog. It stops spammers dead in their tracks from even reaching your blog in the first place. This is done by the plugin looking at the method of delivery to your blog, as well as the spam’s content. As a result, your site is visited less by spammers, and there are less or even none cases of spam on your blog.
The first time I actually began using BB, spam on this blog dropped by a massive 70%, and with subsequent releases has dropped by a huge 90%. The other 10% is now flagged and caught by Akismet. A deadly duo these two plugins.
Counterize
My favourite plugin ever! Created by Anders Holte Nielsen, it is basically a counter plugin that is hugely informative. Detailing Visitor IP, Timestamp, Visted URL’s, Referal URL’s, Browser Info as well as total number of hits and stats on a daily/monthly etc basis. It’s a great way to see who is visiting your blog, and from where they are based and what they are reading on your blog. Even though development on it has now ceased, it remains the best plugin I have used so far.
Inline Collapsible More Link
This plugin allows you to insert “more” links into your post. This differs from the default WordPress “more” link in that it does not take you to the single post page to reveal the rest of the content — it will show you the rest of the post immediately, in real time, without loading a new page. A brilliant, small plugin that does a great job of easing readability on your blog.
