Updates (rather long)

On a spanking Sunday morning at 08:55 I am currently listening to what could be the most relaxing track ever – Stir It Up, from Bob Marley & The Wailers Legend album. I had forgotten how sublime this album was.

Blood Test Woes

Recent life updates would most notably be visiting my doctor for the first time in 18 years to have my first ever Blood Test. I have a severe aversion to needles and even threatened my dentist at the age of 15 so suffice to say that I was shitting bricks. I am no stranger to knives or being stabbed but if you come at me with a needle, I’ll run a bloody mile whilst screaming like Carlton from Fresh Prince. The whole process went by really fast even though the doc was doing the procedure in my left arm, my right arm was clenched ready to let rip. My mother was there to keep an eye on me though! Sad yes, required? Hell yes.

Zen XFI Announced

So, it has arrived. About a year too late if you ask me. Creative had some awesome MP3 players a couple of years ago with the Zen Vision:M leading the pack, and then things went all pear shaped around the time when the Apple Touch arrived. For some daft reason Creative chose to begin producing peripherals for the Apple iPod range thus ignoring their own Zen range. This caused much confusion amongst Zen fans and many pondered where the company was going as they began to shut down one of their larger production facilities.

Apple iPhone v2 – Giv Meh!

Granted it brings little new to the industry in terms of features but that isn’t what it is all about. I have previously said that the OS (Operating System) has huge potential and I stand by that firmly. Wait till you see what is on the way. Given that Jailbreaking my iPod Touch recently brought me in touch with some superb applications virtually transforming my Touch into a device that keeps me almost constantly in touch with news/information/email/instant messaging etc it was clearly the best move I could have done. I can’t live without the hacked Touch now and it is now a tool that I depend on more than my measly mobile phone.

Whilst I’m at home it remains hooked upto my wireless internet connection updating my three email accounts. When I’m on the move it’ll tap into any wireless connection (only useful on foot to be honest!) and update itself (email, rss feeds, euro 2008 realtime results) and when I reach work it taps into a unsecured network and keeps itself updated again. If only I had a phone on this device…

So aside from software potential, what are the cons?

Well for starters 3G isn’t exactly new given that phones are utilising HSDPA now. Apple still insists on making users email photos to each other when MMS is clearly the way forward. Luckily for jailbroken iPhones SwirlyMMS exists as a third party application to do just this. Although whether you would want to with that useless 2MP camera remains a key point. I couldn’t care less about Bluetooth as I hate the power sapping technology. Enough ranting anyway, time for another pic!

A Costly Mistak

Incoming Babble/Rant/Whine

I rarely make mistakes when purchasing gadgets and gizmos. I do my research as much as possible, then scour forums for opinions and feedback from owners. I then do some research into the company and learn about their past products and how much attention those products had (e.g firmware/software updates). Finally I make my purchase based on information from the above analysis.

However I think I’m getting old, because I have made a balls up, a rather large one at that. I am mad about music, in fact the ladies at work often comment that I had been born with earphones already in my ears. So it is with some irony that I work in the field of audio too. I love portable audio players (except crummy ipods to you teenyboppers). I have heaps of them, however at present I own an iPod Touch…not the best sounding player like every other iPod in existance but the touch is a unique exception compared to a normal iPod – it has potential. More on that later anyway.

iPod Touch Review

Yes I know that one isn’t real!

Well up goes a review that I have struggled to even complete. It is a good couple of days late mainly because my life has been taken over by a combination of Team Fortress 2, Work (no change there then), a nagging girlfriend who wants to go shopping, and a France Booze Cruise in two weeks time. All of this isn’t helped by the fact that there are a whopping three birthday parties I have to attend, a wedding (hate these) and two PC’s I have to set-up for two clients all in October! Happy days eh?

Anyway, you can read how I feel about this spiffy new device in the reviews section or just click Here. Want a more detailed review? Well me good mate PR has been blithering on about his one, so you can find his review on his blog.
